Better Best – Have you ever faced a situation where you have gone farther than you have every gone before? If you had realized that you would be this close to your goal a few short months from now, you would be ecstatic.
However, you still have the sinking feeling that you may not be on the right track.
Maybe, you think that you should do be doing more or doing it differently.
That is the uncomfortable feeling out there on the skinny branches, further than where we are before.
Your Better Best. You see, as you grow, it gets uncomfortable. Use the analogy of your shoes. When your feet get bigger, your old shoes no longer fit. You move on to new shoes that fit and, even though they fit you better than the old shoes, they are not familiar. There is an adjustment period that you have to go through to get acquainted with your shoes and for you to be “comfortable walking in your own shoes.”
Any growth period, especially rapid growth feels uncomfortable.
The important question and important thing is – What do you do with that discomfort?1. Acknowledge It – Know that it is there and even take a stab at interpreting what it means. Is it the nervous butterflies that you have right before you go on stage or is it a discomfort like you are on the wrong track. Don’t spend too much time in this process but if you are getting some clear signals, you may want to make minor adjustments.
2. Stick to your Plan – It helps to have your plan documented, especially in those trying periods. When you are questioning yourself and not sure which way to go, you can go back to a calmer time and look at the plan that you created for yourself then. That may give you comfort that you are on the right track.
3. Accept that you have no idea how this plays out – The truth is that you are clueless as to what is round the corner for you. There may be a completely new opportunity that you are blind to right now that is right around the corner. You have no idea what is in store for you and the excitement in life is figuring it out and finding out for yourself. What does that mean? That means don’t over think it and just keep moving forward. Your next step may be the step that changes your life forever.
4. Follow the Leader – Find somebody who has already blazed the path that you are going down. That will give you comfort that you are at least heading in the right direction.
5. Celebrate the progress that you have made – To get to where you are at this point, you have done a lot of work and that is a good think. Acknowledge the work that you have created up until this point and celebrate it. That may work wonders in propelling you to the next level.
Follow the five steps above and you will be well on your way to achieving a better best and achieving a better best faster than you could ever imagine.
