Working on One Thing at a Time – Dealing with Distractions

I am frustrated this morning because there are a couple of things I am working on.  I am getting three articles written in less than an hour and I am pulled to check some emails that are coming in which may or may not require timely response.
This does not work period.  People who have success in their business have the ability to have a specific focus for at least a short period of time.
From what I have seen, those who are the masters of industry can keep focus for an extremely long time.  Take Steve Jobs for example.  When he was heading up development of a new product, he would focus on that and that alone for a period of time.  Sure, he had teams working on the project but he had the ability to know how great it was going to be in the end and would go through amazing heartache and pain to get to the end.
Now, we do not expect you to be like Steve Jobs.  However, you should implement some basic practices that will allow you to focus for a long period of time.  Here are some tips on dealing with distractions and how to keep your focus -
1.       Write down everything that you have to get done - Having everything that needs to get done for a while out of your head will allow you truly focus on the task at hand.  If you are not able to do this, then you will find that your mind will work to distract you and will call you to switch from project to project to project.  If the mind has you wanting to do something, it wants you to do it now.  Having that item documented on a list will serve to quite your nagging mind.
2.      Work in 25 minute blocks - This period was defined in the Pomodoro technique.  Focus on one task for 25 minutes at a time and then you can decide if you want to continue with that task or move on to another task.  It is as simple as that.  You will find that you are able to gain more focus and will have the satisfaction of creating more stuff in the long haul.
